Colby Covington's UFC Comeback: From Campaigning with Trump to the Octagon (2026)

Colby Covington, a prominent UFC star, is aiming for a spot on a White House fight card, a goal fueled by his recent campaigning alongside former President Donald Trump. This ambition has sparked considerable interest, especially given Covington's recent activity within and outside the octagon. But how did he get here? Let's dive in.

Covington's fighting career has seen its share of ups and downs. His appearances in the octagon have been somewhat limited; his upcoming fight at Real American Freestyle on Fox Nation will be only his fourth in almost four years. After a victory over Jorge Masvidal on March 5, 2022, he faced consecutive losses on December 16, 2023, and December 14, 2024.

His most recent bout against Joaquin Buckley was on short notice, just a week after he stepped in for Ian Machado Garry at UFC 310. Covington attributed this loss to his involvement in campaigning for President Donald Trump, a sentiment he reiterated recently.

"Everybody knows I was on the campaign trail with Donald Trump. You know I was out there, you know, trying to save America. You know? I was in New York. I was here, I was there. And then UFC calls me on one week’s notice to take that fight," Covington stated. *"So, that wasn't indicative of the fighter that I am."

"I'm excited that Real American Freestyle gave me a full training camp. I've had *12 weeks** to refine my skills in the freestyle wrestling art. And I'm gonna put on the best performance of my career Saturday night only on Fox Nation."*

Covington's connection with the White House isn't new. He visited shortly after a 2018 win during Trump's first presidency. Now, he hopes to return on June 14 for a UFC event.

"Yeah, that's the plan, you know, is to use these couple matches in Real American Freestyle as my training camp and then, and then hopefully getting on the White House card and fighting on the South Lawn in June for Donald Trump," Covington explained.

But here's where it gets controversial... Covington will face Luke Rockhold, the former UFC middleweight champion from December 2015 to June 2016. This fight marks Rockhold’s first MMA appearance since August 20, 2022.

Covington previously won the UFC welterweight title in 2018 but lost it about a year and a half later. He was unsuccessful in regaining the title in two other championship fights.

And this is the part most people miss... The intersection of sports and politics can be a tricky one. Do you think Covington's political activities have influenced his fighting career? Do you agree or disagree with his views? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
