In a thrilling turn of events, a promising tight end from Utah has made headlines by committing to Michigan after an impressive freshman year. JJ Buchanan, the standout player, took to social media to announce his decision on Sunday, signaling his intention to join the Wolverines for the 2026 season.
Buchanan's commitment comes shortly after his visit to Ann Arbor, where he met with Michigan's new head coach Kyle Whittingham, offensive coordinator Jason Beck, and tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham. Notably, all three were also part of the coaching staff at Utah during the 2025 season, where they witnessed Buchanan's exceptional talent firsthand.
Standing at an athletic 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 225 pounds, Buchanan showcased his remarkable pass-catching skills during his inaugural college season. He completed the year with 26 receptions, accumulating 427 yards and scoring five touchdowns, which translates to an impressive average of 16.4 yards per catch. Among his notable performances, he recorded three catches exceeding 30 yards, including a spectacular 58-yard touchdown reception against Kansas and a 60-yard gain against Kansas State.
Buchanan concluded his freshman campaign on a high note, delivering a standout performance with four catches for 76 yards in the Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska.
Originally hailing from Henderson, Nevada, Buchanan was a highly sought-after four-star recruit during his high school years at Coronado High School. There, he not only excelled as a wide receiver but also showcased his versatility by playing safety and participating in the basketball team. In his senior year alone, he racked up 1,023 receiving yards, scored 11 touchdowns, and made significant contributions on defense with 60 tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery, and two pass breakups.
With Buchanan's transfer, he becomes the third player from Utah to join Michigan following Whittingham's appointment, joining defensive end John Henry Daley and defensive tackle Jonah Lea’ea in this transition.
