A Player's Redemption Story: Kurashev's Journey from Disappointment to Revival
Philipp Kurashev, a forward for the San Jose Sharks, has a unique perspective on his time with the Chicago Blackhawks. He's not one to dwell on the past, especially the challenging season he had last year. "I'd rather not dive into last season's struggles," Kurashev shared with reporters in Chicago. "It was a tough journey for both me and the team. This year, however, has been a breath of fresh air, and I'm loving every moment."
Two seasons ago, Kurashev was on fire, scoring 18 goals and racking up 54 points in 75 games. He was a key player in the Blackhawks' top-six and their first power play unit, often paired with rookie sensation Connor Bedard. But last season, his performance dipped significantly, with only seven goals and 14 points in 51 games. This decline mirrored the team's overall struggles, as they finished second-to-last in the NHL.
The Blackhawks' decision not to offer Kurashev, a restricted free agent, a qualifying offer, opened the door for a new beginning. Mike Grier, recognizing Kurashev's potential, signed him to a one-year, $1.2 million prove-it deal. Kurashev embraced the change, seeing it as an opportunity for a fresh start.
"I needed this, especially at the beginning of the season," Kurashev explained. "Before my injury, I felt like I was finding my groove and playing some of my best hockey. It was a much-needed change, and I'm grateful for the chance."
Kurashev's return to Chicago after an upper-body injury has been a success. In his first game back, he contributed to the Sharks' comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins. With six goals and 15 points in 32 games, he's been a consistent presence in the team's top-nine. Kurashev attributes this resurgence, in part, to the positive environment within the Sharks' locker room.
"The camaraderie we have is incredible. There's so much positivity and joy in our room, and it translates onto the ice. We've had our moments of success, but now we need to keep the momentum going and push for a playoff spot."
When asked if facing his former team adds extra motivation, Kurashev was clear: "Absolutely, 100%. But at the end of the day, this is a crucial game for us. We need the win, and every point counts. That's our focus, and I'll do everything I can to contribute to the team's success."
Kurashev's journey is an inspiring tale of resilience and growth. He's not only found his footing with the Sharks but is also set to represent Switzerland at the Olympics. "It's been on my mind, and I'm glad I got a few games under my belt before heading there. Playing in the Olympics will keep me in game shape, which is huge for me. It's been a challenging road, but I'm grateful it all worked out."
The San Jose Sharks (27-22-4) are gearing up for their game against the Chicago Blackhawks (21-25-9) at the United Center. Yaroslav Askarov will start in goal, and the Sharks' lineup includes some notable names: Smith-Celebrini-Toffoli, Eklund-Wennberg-Graf, and Regenda-Misa-Kurashev. On the power play, expect to see Orlov-Celebrini-Smith-Wennberg-Toffoli and Liljegren-Eklund-Misa-Kurashev-Regenda.
